Lip Service featured college students lip-syncing to popular songs.

Two teams of three, representing colleges & universities competed in a lip syncing contest to win an appearance in an MTV music video at the end of the season. The game was played in three musical rounds. After each team's performance, they would get scored by a panel of three celebrity judges, on accuracy, body mechanics (later renamed "Sass") and overall performance. In the first season, a toss-up music video determined who got control of the first song.

Round 1 (Deadly Medley)Edit

In the first round, players took turns lip syncing to excerpt of songs. The catch was that they didn't know what songs would come up nor the order in which they would appear. The team's were scored by each judge on a scale of 1-10 for a maximum total of 30.

Round 2 (Flip-Sync)Edit

In round two, a music video was shown, but the artist in that video did not sing. The team in control sung the song themselves. Again the team's were scored by each judge on a scale of 1-10.

Round 3 (Scratch Factor)Edit

In the third and final round of the competition, both teams one at a time sung a song they previously rehearsed. Here's where the "scratch factor" came in, while they were singing, the show's DJ messed with the song in anyway. He/she can scratch, go backwards, speeding up or slowing down, whatever it takes. While the DJ messed with the song, the teams had to react to whatever the DJ was doing. This time the team's were scored by each judge on a scale of 1-20 (10-20 in the second season) for a maximum total of 60.

The team with the most points at the end of each round won a prize, and the team with the most points at the end of the game won a grand prize and an invitation to return later in the season for that appearance in an MTV music video. If the game ended in a tie, a tiebreaker toss-up music video decided the winning team.
