Kesha Rose Sebert (born March 1, 1987 and formerly stylized as Ke$ha), is an American singer-songwriter and rapper.

Influenced by various genres and artists, Kesha primarily draws inspiration from the music of the 1980s; Madonna, Queen, and Beck have been cited as instrumental to her artistry.

As a young child, her mother Pebe was a struggling singer-songwriter trying to support her two children (Kesha & older brother Lagan). When she was four years old in 1991, her family moved to Nashville, Tennessee after her mother received a publishing deal for her songwriting. Years later while going to high school and taking songwriting classes, Kesha would write songs with her mother after being taught by her and she and her brother were in a band together.

When she was 18 years old, Dr. Luke gave her a music contract with his company and she moved back to L.A. to pursue her music career. Kesha dropped out of high school, one year prior. She had worked with many pop stars by either singing with them or writing songs for them before making it big on her own in 2010 with her first hit solo album Animal.

On January 3, 2014, Kesha announced that she checked in to rehab for treatment of her eating disorder. She also said that it was Dr. Luke's fault that she checked herself in there. Her mother Pebe also checked in, but for alcoholism, drug use, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Two months later in March of the same year, Kesha checked out of rehab, changed her style and she even dropped the dollar sign in her name and replaced it with a regular "S".

Since 2015, Kesha took Dr. Luke to court in the hope that she gets out of her contract with Dr. Luke. But the judge denied her request for an injunction on February 19, 2016. Since then, many artists (including Lady Gaga & Kelly Clarkson) & her fans rallied at her side against her label. This created the hashtag #FreeKesha. In April of 2016, Sony Music dropped Dr. Luke from the company and Kemosabe Records.

Despite the legal setback, Kesha continues to make music in different ways and had also become a pretty accomplished TV personality. In 2013, Kesha starred in her reality series called My Crazy Beautiful Life and was one of the experts on ABC's Rising Star. Kesha has since started to release her albums again.
