Joey was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Donna & Joseph Lawrence Mignogna Sr. His family legally dropped the surname during his childhood. Joey is the oldest of three brothers (the other two are fellow actors Matthew & Andrew).
While going to school, Joey started his acting career in a Cracker Jack commercial. When he was five, he performed Give My Regards to Broadway on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. Then after some guest appearances on two sitcoms, Joey won his role as the mischievous foster son of Nell Carter's character Joey Donovan on Gimme a Break!. His brother Matthew joined him near the end of the run.

Joey managed to find time to do some theatre work having starred in Summer Rental.
In 1988 after Gimme a Break! was cancelled, Joey voiced Oliver the cat in Oliver & Company for Disney.
Joey Lawrence was married twice. His first was to Michelle Vella in 2002; the couple divorced in 2004. His second and current wife is Chandie Yawn-Nelson. They met while on vacation in Disney World when the two were teenagers; they married there 13 years later, in July 2005. The couple have two daughters, Charli, born in 2006 and Liberty, born in 2010.
