Season 16 (1999-2000)[]

Season changes:

  • The opening credits have changed to a new version of the CGI Sony Pictures Studios flyover. We zoom out on a TV tube shape to show various photographs from the show on some television tubes, which moves from right to left. As this happens, gold letters pop in one by one to form the Jeopardy! logo, then, one last television tube floats from the right, and zooms in to reveal the 1996-2002 set.
  • WebTV introduces an interactive element that allowed users to play along with Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, indicated by a "WebTV interactive program" bug at the beginning of the show.
  • This is the last season where the contestants walked onto the set at the beginning of the show before Alex's entrance, due to the contestants standing at their podiums in the next season.
  • This is the last season to use Johnny's opening catchphrase; "Now entering the studio are today's contestants", it had been used since the syndicated run debuted on September 10, 1984. In the next season, the phrase "Now entering the studio are today's contestants" was dropped.
  • This is the last season where the announcement of the consolation prizes for the 2nd and 3rd place contestants took place at the end of Double Jeopardy! and before Final Jeopardy!
  • This is the last full season to have a longer version of the 1997-2001 theme.
  • This is the last season where the studio audience is shown on camera.
  • This is also the last full season where the categories flip over.
  • This is also the last season where Johnny said "From the Sony Pictures Studios, this is Jeopardy!".
  • On early episodes of this season, Johnny said "Jeopardy! was created by Merv Griffin", but this changes in the latter half of this season.
  • On later episodes of this season, Johnny no longer signs off during the credits.
  • On early episodes of this season, Harry Friedman and Merv Griffin were executive producers.

This season:

  • Season 16 of Jeopardy! kicks off on September 6, 1999.
  • On the September 6-10, 1999 episodes, Back to School Week is held for the first time.
  • On the December 8, 1999 episode, Alex explained what the crew does during the commercial break, right before the Final Jeopardy! segment.
  • Harry Friedman became executive producer.
  • On the season premiere week, Game Show Network changed to the "Ball Maze" ID with the voiceover saying; "Why just watch television when you can play from home? Game Show Network! Buzz your cable company to get in the game!".
  • On the October 20, 1999 episode, Eddie Timanus became the first blind contestant to appear on Jeopardy!.
  • On October 26, 1999, Eddie Timanus won his 5th Game and clinched a Tournament of Champions spot.
  • The November 1-5, 1999 episodes were the first week of the Teen Tournament.
  • The November 8-19, 1999 episodes are taped at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
    • The November 8-12, 1999 episodes were the semi-final, and the final episodes of the Teen Tournament, and the November 15-19, 1999 episodes were Celebrity Jeopardy!.
  • The December 15, 1999 episode marks the last time, the 1998 Jeopardy! Online logo was used at the end of the show.
  • Beginning with the December 21, 1999 episode, Johnny no longer said "Jeopardy! was created by Merv Griffin".
  • Starting with the December 27, 1999 episode, the Jeopardy! Online logo changed to "Play Online and Win". The logo consisted of "JEOPARDY! ONLINE" in light blue on a yellow oval against a black background. A techno version if the first logo was remixed, as the text "Play Online and Win" appear onscreen. After that, we see the "JEOPARDY! ONLINE" logo from before, and the text "Play Online and Win" appear, with the URL "jeopardy.com", followed by the last four notes of the show's theme song.
  • On the December 30, 1999 episode, a full credit roll was shown.
  • On the December 31, 1999 episode, the contestants that day were Shala Carlson, Jack Reidy, and Jack Archey. On this episode:
    • The categories in the Jeopardy! round: "Astronomy", "Heavenly Bodies", "Stars on the Map", "Venus", "Sons", and "Moon"'s.
    • The categories in the Double Jeopardy! round: "19th Century America", "Rose is a Rose", "Native American Tribes", "Crossword Clues "S"", "Films of the '70s", and "It's Not the End of the World".
    • The Final Jeopardy! category was "Today's Sports Stars".
    • On the January 3, 2000 episode, the contestants were Allan Kreda, Jeannie Sank, and Jack Archey. On this episode:
      • The categories in the Jeopardy! round: "Around the Globe", "TV Personalities", "English Ships", "Call Me Steve", "I Wrote a Book!", and "Converbs", as opposed to proverbs.
      • The categories in the Double Jeopardy! round: "U.S. Government", "Muscling In", "Imax Films", "The Rainbow", "Veeps by Middle Name", and "Speak in Hawaiian".
      • The Final Jeopardy! category was "From Play to Ballet".
      • Johnny's catchphrase "Jeopardy! was created by Merv Griffin" is no longer heard.
  • The College Championship was held at home base for the first time since Season 13, and aired from February 7-18, 2000, with a college-themed set.
    • Janet Wong from Drew University won the college tournament of $50,000, a Volvo S40 sedan, followed by a college trophy.
    • Lisa Finneran, Rocky Schmidt, and Gary Johnson became co-producers.
    • On the February 10, 2000 episode, Johnny made a cameo appearance after reading the clues for a Poetry category.
  • The May 8-19, 2000 episodes are the Tournament of Champions held in Atlanta, Georgia, at the Atlanta Civic Center.
    • During the first quarterfinal games of that episode, after Johnny said "From Atlanta, Georgia, this is the Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions!". Then five seconds later, after the audience applause, he introduced Alex on stage first before introducing the contestants. This is because Alex wanted to explain to the viewers at home that this is the first time that they taped the Tournament of Champions on location. Then, they showed the fifteen champions on the game board, followed by an applause.
    • This season's Tournament of Champions included two Teen Tournaments, two College Championships, and eleven 5-time champions. It was the last time, the Teen Tournament victors are eligible for the Tournament of Champions.
    • The first three competed in the first match with Johnny's introduction, followed by the game. This was the last time that Johnny announced how much winnings these champions earned on their last appearance of the show during the quarterfinal introductions after their name.
    • Robin Carroll, from Marietta, Georgia, won the $100,000 Tournament of Champions in her hometown.
  • On the June 30, 2000 episode, Alex brings his kids, Matthew, and Emily, onstage at the beginning of this episode.
  • On the July 4, 2000 episode, a full credit roll was shown. Merv Griffin was no longer credited as the executive producer. Harry Friedman is now the sole executive producer.
  • On the July 5, 2000 episode, Johnny accidentally announced himself as "Glenn Trebek" for the only time.
  • Season 16 of Jeopardy! wraps up on July 21, 2000.
  • Summer reruns air from July 24-September 1, 2000 with replacement fee plugs. Reruns later air on weekends from 2000-2001.
